What Can You Use to Remove Hard Water Buildup on a Refrigerator?

Hard water, which is water with a high content of minerals including calcium and magnesium ions, is typically not harmful to your health but can cause buildup on appliances. When the water evaporates, minerals are left behind and create a film, which is usually white in color. A water softener can be purchased to remove most of the minerals, but if you don't have one and your appliance, such as a refrigerator, begins to accumulate hard water buildup, clean it with basic household solutions.
  1. Store-Bought Cleaners

    • Many products are available at the store to remove hard water mineral buildup. For use in the kitchen, look for anything that contains phosphoric acid. The acid breaks down the minerals and lifts them from the surface.

    Baking Soda

    • Make a paste of baking soda and warm water. Spread the paste where the mineral buildup is located and allow it to dry. Rinse the baking soda paste off and wipe down with a cloth to prevent leaving behind minerals or traces of baking soda.

    Vinegar

    • Vinegar is a go-to solution for all types of household cleaning and should be a staple in your home's cleaning supplies collection. Pour some white vinegar on a cloth and apply it to the surface of your refrigerator generously. Allow it to sit for approximately 30 minutes, then wipe off with a different cloth.

    Bleach

    • Bleach is harsh and not always the most desirable to use for cleaning, especially where food preparation occurs, but it does the job to get minerals off. It also prevents your refrigerator from looking unsightly, especially if it's stainless steel or black.
