How to Clear a Gas Smell on the Floor

No matter how it got there, gasoline on your carpets and wood flooring is a disaster that goes far beyond removing the stain. The odor left behind penetrates the entire home, and it can make your children and pets ill. Cleaning up the gasoline is a two-step process that involves removing the physical stain and eliminating the unwanted odor, both of which are accomplished with the same products.

Instructions

  1. Carpets

    • 1

Cover the stain with a thick coating of cornstarch. Allow the cornstarch to remain and soak up the gasoline for at least 30 minutes.

    • 2

Scoop up the gasoline-soaked cornstarch with a small shovel, and place it into a plastic bag to be disposed of later.

    • 3

Create a mixture of 1 tablespoon liquid dish soap and 1/2 gallon lukewarm water. Stir the ingredients to create a sudsy mixture.

    • 4

Dampen a plastic scrub brush with the soapy mixture and work it into the gasoline stain. Continue to work the mixture into the stain until it, and the odor, are eliminated. If the stain and odor persist, move to the next step.

    • 5

Dampen a rag with dry cleaning solvent. Dab at the stain with the dry cleaning solvent to lift the gasoline from your carpet.

    • 6

Allow the solvent to soak into the carpet for at least 30 minutes before rinsing it away with warm water. Remove the excess water with a wet/dry vac, or dab at it with a towel.

    Wood Floors

    • 7

Cover the gasoline stain with clay-based kitty litter. Allow the litter to remain for at least 30 minutes before scooping it up with a small shovel and placing it into a plastic bag.

    • 8

Create a mixture of 1/2 tablespoon liquid dish soap, 1/2 teaspoon lavender extract and 4 cups hot water. Slip on a pair of rubber gloves before dampening a rag with the mixture.

    • 9

Work the soapy mixture into the gasoline stain until it is completely eliminated. Rinse the flooring with a separate damp rag. The soapy mixture eliminates the gasoline stain and odor while the lavender leaves behind a light, pleasant scent.
