What Can I Spray on a Mattress to Stop Mildew From Spreading?

Mildew is a mold that thrives in wet, moist conditions. The key to removing and preventing mildew from spreading is to keep things dry and clean. Mildew will only grow or spread in certain conditions, such as on organic material like fabric-covered mattress, in warm temperatures above 77 degrees, and on surfaces with excess soiling and moisture. Cleaning agents such as rubbing alcohol, bleach and lemon juice effectively kill mold and mildew on contact.

Instructions

    • 1

Spray the mattress with a water-repellent spray. These sprays coat the surface of the fabric with a protective water-resistant chemical that prevents mildew from growing on the surface and spreading to other areas.

    • 2

Spray the mattress with lemon juice. The acidity in the juice will kill the mildew and prevent it from spreading. Sprinkle a handful of salt on the mildew to absorb the moisture, and then lay the mattress in the sun to dry. Wipe the mattress with a damp cloth to remove the juice and salt.

Make a mixture of 1 tablespoon of sodium perborate powder with 1 pint of water in a spray bottle. Spray the mattress and let the mixture soak for 30 minutes. Wipe the mattress with a damp cloth after and allow it to dry.

Make a mixture of 2 tablespoon of chlorine bleach with 1 quart of warm water. Spray the mattress and allow the mixture to soak for five to 15 minutes. Wipe the mattress with a damp cloth and allow it to dry.

Make a mixture of 1 cup of rubbing alcohol and 1 cup of water. Spray the mattress with the mixture and wipe it with a cloth. Allow the mattress to dry thoroughly.
