Harbor Freight 5-Gallon Wet Dry Vacuum Blower Will Not Pick Up

A Harbor Freight 5-gallon wet/dry vacuum should have powerful suction when used properly. Inspect it for power issues if the vacuum will not pick up. Improperly assembling the vacuum can also cause suction issues, as well as blocked openings and damaged parts that may prevent the vacuum from picking up dirt and debris.
  1. Power Issues

    • Plug your Harbor Freight vacuum into a properly installed grounded outlet. The power requirement may vary slightly on each model, but most models require 120 volts to operate correctly. The power cord has a polarized plug, with one blade wider than the other. The plug fits into the outlet only one way. If it meets resistance when you attempt to plug it in, reverse the plug. If the plug still does not fit correctly, contact a qualified electrician to install the proper outlet.

    Operating Instructions

    • To ensure the vacuum is set up correctly for suctioning dirt and other debris, verify its assembly. The large end of the hose connects to the suction port. Attach any of the extension wands or tools to the open end of the hose. Plug the power cord into the outlet and flip the power switch to the "On" position.

    Blockages and Damaged Parts

    • Keep all openings clear, including the hose, attachments and ports. Clean all dust, dirt, lint, hair or other debris from the vacuum. Before each use, inspect the openings for clogs and clear them out. When checking for clogs, look for damaged or binding parts. Do not use the vacuum until it's repaired. After each use, empty the tank and clean out the dust bag and filters.

    Warnings

    • Turn off the power switch before plugging in the vacuum's power cord; accidental start up can result in injury. Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry and keep long hair up while using the vacuum. If using the vacuum outside, use an extension cord rated for outdoor use to prevent electrical shock. Do not use the vacuum in the rain or other wet conditions; doing so may result in electrical shock. Keep children, pets and bystanders away from the vacuum when operating it.
