How to Remove Scum on Ceramic Cookware

Ceramic cookware, whether it's an oven casserole dish or a frying pan, provides the benefits of cast iron but is easier to clean due to the ceramic enamel coating. Food residue, mineral deposits and soap scum still build up on the ceramic surface, especially if a pot is allowed to boil dry or food is burned during cooking. Removing the scum without damaging the enamel ensures the cookware performs well for many years.

Things You'll Need

  • Dish soap
  • Nylon scrubbing pad
  • Baking soda

Instructions

    • 1

Wash the ceramic cookware in hot water using a mild dish soap. Scrub the ceramic with a mildly abrasive nylon scrubbing pad to remove as much scum or food residue as possible.

    • 2

Soak the pan in hot water combined with two to three squirts of dish soap to loosen burned-on food. Soak for 20 to 30 minutes, then scrub a second time to remove the remaining food scum.

    • 3

Combine equal parts white vinegar and baking soda to make a paste. Coat soap scum and hard water marks with the paste and allow it to soak for 10 minutes.

    • 4

Scrub the paste-covered areas with the nylon scrubbing pad. Reapply the paste and scrub a second time to remove any remaining residue.

    • 5

Rinse the cookware with clear water. Hand-wash or run the item through the dishwasher as usual.
