Can I Use Arm and Hammer Oven Cleaner on Painted Oven Surfaces?

Baking-Soda Uses

• Arm and Hammer baking soda is an ingredient in many baked and pastry goods, as the name suggests, but it has many applications inside the household. It's common practice to place a box of baking soda in the refrigerator because of its deodorizing properties. Some reach for the baking soda when they start a small kitchen fire, because the powdery material will immediately extinguish the flames. Some have used baking soda for personal hygiene, as a deodorant or toothpaste. Baking soda is also used as a cleaning agent, and may be used on porcelain, stainless steel, chrome, aluminum and other sensitive metals, including wall and appliance paint.

Painted Surfaces

• Because baking soda is safe and gentle enough to be used on wall paint, it's very safe and effective for use on painted appliances. Apply a little of the powder to a water-dampened sponge, and gently rub away the dirt and stains you wish to remove. Scrub gently with nonabrasive cleaning cloths and sponges, and you will not cause damage to your painted oven surface when you clean with baking soda.

Oven Cleaner

• Mix the Arm and Hammer baking soda and warm water to create a cleaning paste strong enough to remove grime on stove tops and inside the oven. Leave the paste overnight inside the oven and on hard-to-remove stains on the outside of the painted oven surface. After the paste has dried, remove it with a soft scrub pad or sponge. The dirt will be removed with the old paste.

However, you may notice that boxes of Arm and Hammer come with a warning. When mixed with acid, like vinegar, baking soda forms a gas. The gas is inert and harmless in the open air, but inside an enclosed space (a bottle or plastic container, for example) the pressure of the gas could become explosive and dangerous. Use Arm and Hammer only as intended to avoid potentially dangerous situations.
