Are Oak Parquet Floors No-Wax?

Parquet wood floors are generally manufactured in 12-inch squares and from 5/16 to 7/16 inches thick. Parquet comes in several wood types, including oak. Oak wood comes in two general colors: red and white. Oak is often selected for its durability and appearance. During manufacturing, oak parquet floors are sealed and finished to protect and shine the parquet pieces before installation.
  1. Finishes

    • Manufacturers that finish parquet floor use one of following finishes: ultraviolet-cured, polyurethane, acrylic urethane, ceramic, aluminum oxide or acrylic impregnation. Each finish is applied to protect the floor from scratches and provide different finishes. Finishes can range from flat to high gloss, depending on the buyer’s preference.

    Wax or No-Wax?

    • Oak parquet floors are not waxed during manufacturing and don’t require wax to maintain their appearance. Although finishes used on oak parquet floors shine as if they were waxed, each finish is a type of lacquer or sealant to protect the wood and add luster. The finish is used not only to protect the wood from scratches and wear, but also to resist environmental factors such as heat and humidity. Heat can dry wood and humidity can cause it to buckle or expand.

    Daily Care

    • In areas of the home where spills and traffic are common, area rugs will protect the oak parquet floor. High traffic and frequent spills will wear down the floor over time. Use felt pads under furniture legs and only move furniture by placing a rug or soft cloth under each leg. Take off shoes before walking on the oak parquet, especially shoes that don’t have rubber soles, to lessen possible scratches. Wipe spills immediately with a lightly dampened soft rag. Sweep dust and debris off the floor with a soft broom or dry mop daily.

    Long-Term Care

    • Mop oak parquet floors with hot water at least weekly, depending on how much foot traffic it bears. A standard, clean rayon or cotton string mop and hot water will work for regular cleanings. Wring the mop out aggressively to avoid long drying times and streaks. Mop the floor using figure eights to cover the entire floor area. Repeat the process to ensure it’s clean. If the manufacturer recommends cleaning and polishing products for the oak parquet, use those products for best results and to ensure the manufacturer’s warranty is not voided.
