Biograde Solvent for Cleaning

With all the buzzwords floating around, including “biodegrade” and “non-toxic”, it’s difficult for a homeowner to know how to clean a kitchen and bathroom without breaking the bank or harming pets and family. An ideal cleaning solvent removes stains from around the home without harming the environment. Save your money by making biodegradable cleaning solvents at home.
  1. All-Purpose Cleaner

    • Create a mixture of one-quarter cup white vinegar, one-eighth cup boric acid powder, one-half gallon warm water and one teaspoon lavender essential extract. Stir the ingredients thoroughly and pour the mixture into empty plastic spray bottles. All the products are safe, biodegradable and effectively remove various stains throughout the house on several surfaces, from your kitchen’s laminate countertops to the bathroom’s sink and toilet. Store the cleaner in covered plastic containers in a cool, dry place.

    Laundry Soap

    • Combine one cup washing soda, which isn’t the same thing as baking soda and is available in your grocer’s laundry aisle, one-half cup baking soda, one cup boric acid powder, one teaspoon lavender essential oil and one teaspoon lemon juice. Stir the ingredients together and store in a covered plastic container. For regular loads, sprinkle one to two tablespoons of the mixture over your dirty clothing in the washer. If the clothing is soiled, add an extra one tablespoon to the washer. Store the mixture in a cool, dry place.

    Window Cleaner

    • Use a combination of biodegradable products to clean your windows. Create a liquid window cleaner by combining one-half cup white vinegar, one tablespoon cornstarch and one-half gallon warm water. Stir the ingredients until they are well-incorporated and pour it into two to three plastic spray bottles. Spray the mixture on your windows in the same manner you would a commercial product. Wipe the homemade window cleaner away with chunk of newspaper. The newspaper is biodegradable and helps create a thin, clear film over the window that prevents future grime and dirt buildup.

    Drain Cleaner

    • Pour one cup white vinegar down any drain in the home, immediately followed by one cup baking soda. Cover the drain with a plug or overturned drinking glass and allow the mixture to remain for at least 30 minutes. During this time, the reaction caused by the two ingredients creates a bubbling that loosens the hair and grease from the drain pipes. Remove the plug and pour one to two gallons of hot water down the drain to flush away the loosened clog and debris.
