Scratches in a Dark Bronze Sink Fixture

Dark bronze sink fixtures add classic, Old World charm to your kitchen or bath. The sturdy metal has cleaning and maintenance needs similar to that of brass fixtures. When improperly cleaned or handled, bronze fixtures can develop surface scratches that collect dirt and debris, resulting in sink fixtures that look dirty and stained. You can refinish the surface of your bronze fixtures to smooth them and prevent the scratches from collecting dirt.
  1. What Causes Surface Scratches

    • Regardless of how strong and sturdy a metal surface is, it can still sustain scratches. Other metal objects, such as a razor or razor blades, kept nearby can cause scratches, but the common culprit is the use of improper cleaning supplies. The wrong cleaning products and tools cause light scratches and scuffs to form on the surface of your bronze sink fixtures.

    How to Avoid Scratches

    • Choose a nonmetallic sponge to avoid scratching bronze.

Avoid scratching your bronze sink fixtures by steering clear of abrasive soft cleaners and scouring powder. These abrasives cause tiny, hairline scratches to form, and even though you can't see them, they become noticeable when dirt collects in the grooves. It's also best to avoid using metallic scrub brushes and scouring pads for the same reasons and store metal shaving or haircare products on a bathroom shelf instead of on the sink.

    Prepare the Surface

    • Before you repair the surface scratches in your bronze sink fixtures you must prepare the surface by cleaning it. Combine 1 teaspoon of salt and 1 cup of water, stirring the two ingredients until they're dissolved. Add white flour to the mixture to make a thin paste. Clean the bronze fixtures and remove any tarnish by spreading the thin paste over the bronze with a clean cloth. Let the paste sit on the surface for 30 minutes before wiping it off. This removes dirt, as well as tarnish, and avoids causing further scratches due to gritty dirty residue.

    Remove Surface Scratches

    • Surface scratches in your bronze sink fixtures are removed through polishing. A polish made specifically for bronze is applied to a soft cloth and rubbed into the bronze. It's best to use a microfiber cloth to ensure softness. Rub the polish onto the bronze sink fixtures in small, circular motions, similar to the way you would wax a car. You can also use buffing pads, too. Once you've smoothed the bronze sink fixtures with the polish, wipe off excess polish with a microfiber cloth.
