Agitator Brushes Are Not Moving in a Hoover Self-Propelled Upright WindTunnel

The Hoover self-propelled WindTunnel moves with ease going forward because of the self-propelled mechanism in the base of the unit. Hoover self-propelled models contain two belts attached to the mechanism – the motor pulley and V-belt, also referred to as the agitator belt. If the agitator brushes are not moving, the vacuum base needs to be disassembled to replace one or both belts.
  1. Removing the Base Plate

    • Always turn off the vacuum and unplug it from the electrical outlet before examining the agitator brushes. Remove the base plate by unscrewing the screws with a Phillips-head screwdriver. The base plate will lift off after the screws are removed.

    Belts

    • A large and small belt will be visible after the base plate is removed. If one of the belts is broken or not moving, that is why the agitator brush is not rotating. The motor pulley belt is the wider belt connected to a small metal bar. The agitator brush belt is the smaller belt connected to the brush roll and inner part of the large pulley. Move the brush roll with your hand to determine whether it moves. Both belts move when moving the brush roll. If either belt doesn't move, it should be replaced.

    Motor Pulley Belt

    • The motor pulley belt most likely needs to be replaced. A replacement motor pulley belt is available at a variety of Hoover-authorized dealers and general merchandise stores. Simply remove the belt and reattach the new belt to the motor pulley and to the larger pulley that operates the self-propelled mechanism on the vacuum.

    Agitator Belt

    • The agitator belt, which is connected to the inside small bar of the large pulley and to the brush roll, is expected to last through the life of the vacuum, according to Hoover. If the agitator belt is broken or loose enough to fall out of the groove on the brush roll, it can be replaced. Remove the larger, motor pulley belt first. Lift the brush roll out of the base, and slide the belt off the brush roll. Remove the other end of the belt from the large pulley. Put a new agitator belt onto the inner part of the large pulley. Wrap the other end of the belt onto the brush roller in the groove. Put the motor pulley belt back into place by attaching it to the motor pulley and large pulley. Attach the base plate of the vacuum by screwing in the four screws with a Phillips-head screwdriver.
