How to Clean Crusty Aluminum

Aluminum is a metal that is used to create kitchen utensils, pots and pans. Over time and after continuous use, old food and other residue can dry on your aluminum pieces and create a hard crust that is too tough to remove with a sponge and warm water alone. While it's possible to purchase a special cleaner just to help clean the crusty aluminum, you can remove the crust yourself using a few simple household ingredients.

Things You'll Need

  • Baking soda
  • White vinegar
  • Steel wool pad
  • Soft cloth

Instructions

    • 1

Cover the entire crusty area on the aluminum piece with baking soda.

    • 2

Pour a thin stream of white vinegar over the baking soda. There should be an immediate, fizzing reaction. The baking soda and vinegar fizz will break apart the crust on the aluminum and make it easy to wash away.

    • 3

Scrub the area using a steel wool pad, using small circular motions over the crust until it breaks away from the aluminum.

    • 4

Rinse the area with hot water until all baking soda and crust remnants have been washed away.

    • 5

Buff the aluminum dry using a soft cloth.
