Or you could refurbish a barn for livestock and find that the previous owners didn’t keep it clean. In either situation, it'll take more than a little pine scented cleaner or bleach water to make the space habitable and smelling sweet for man or beast.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all animal equipment from the building and any remaining bedding used by the livestock. Dispose of any matting found in animal stalls if the matting smells of urine or other livestock smells. Rake any large piles of bedding into a wheelbarrow and sweep the remaining smaller particles into a dustpan. Transfer the material from the building into a compost pile, garden or garbage container.

    • 2

Clear out anything that attracts rodents and other pests or would suffer damage if it gets wet. Pretreat spots where there is a strong animal odor by covering the area with an absorbent deodorizer such a zeolite mixture consisting of powdered ferrierrite, clintoptilolite, phillipsite and mordenite. Allow the zeolite mix to remain on the area for approximately eight hours. Sweep it up and remove it from the building. Reapply the mixture if an odor remains.

    • 3

Use a pressure washer to spray the floors with a mild bleach solution or a liquid deodorizer. Wipe the walls and work surfaces with a rag dipped in the same or similar solution. Allow the area to thoroughly dry.

    • 4

Walk through the building and note any areas where odors remain. Retreat the area with a light covering of absorbent deodorizer. Sweep the deodorizer out after eight hours and remove it from the building.

    • 5

Place fresh floor covering down after the area is completely deodorized. Maintain a clean environment by dealing with problem spots when they are new and small, instead of letting them get out of hand.
