How to Get a Smoke Smell Out of Fabric That Is Not Washable

The smell of smoke, whether from a home fire or from cigarette smoke, can be pervasive and persistent. It penetrates most porous surfaces, including wood and textiles. Attempting to disguise the odor with sweet-smelling sprays only lasts as long as the life of the chemicals in the spray. If the fabric cannot be laundered, you might think that the item cannot be salvaged, but there are several steps you can take to reduce and possibly eliminate smoke smells from fabric, even if it cannot be washed.

Instructions

    • 1

Air out the item. Take it outdoors and allow fresh air to circulate around it for at least 24 hours. This may slightly reduce the smoke odor, and is safe for all fabrics.

    • 2

Steam the item with a mix of vinegar and water. Check the care label for the item to make sure the item can be exposed to steam. Fill the tank of a steamer with equal parts vinegar and water, and use the steamer according to manufacturer's directions, holding the nozzle at least 6 inches away from the item.

Have the item dry cleaned, if possible.

    • 4

Use a fabric odor eliminator spray. Test the spray on an inconspicuous area to make sure that the spray won't stain the fabric. Spray a fine mist evenly over the item.
