How to Keep Permanent Adhesive Vinyl from Sticking Permanently to Glass

Many vinyl stickers and decals are made to withstand the test of time and stay glued to glass surfaces forever. Although these sticky labels claim to be permanent, there are a few simple techniques you can use to effectively remove vinyl adhesives from windows, windshields and other glass items. It’s a good thing that vinyl adhesives aren’t as permanent as their manufacturers would lead you to believe. All too often, the need for vinyl adhesives on your glass surface will come and go, but your window will last much longer than the decal.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the vinyl adhesive under a heat lamp to melt the glue for easy removal.

    • 2

Scrape off the adhesive with a razor blade. Pull off the vinyl adhesive decal by hand.

    • 3

Wipe the remaining vinyl adhesive with a soft rag doused with an adhesive-removing solvent. Allow the solvent to remain on the residue for 1 1/2 to 2 minutes. This will further relax the glue’s hold.

    • 4

Scrub the glass with the hard edge of a scraper or squeegee to remove any remaining residue.

    • 5

Rub the glass clean with a damp washcloth and warm water. Gently scrape away any stubborn pieces of vinyl adhesive residue with a razor.
