How to Polish Stainless to a Billet Shine

Fine metal surfaces in home decor and antiques are an investment in the appearance of your home. A lustrous, mirror-like shine brings out the true beauty of these metal accents. Using the wrong polish can result in a hazy or dull finish and end up detracting from the appearance instead of enhancing it. You can polish your stainless steel items to a billet shine using appropriate supplies that remove tarnish, haze and discoloration while enhancing the natural luster of the steel.

Instructions

    • 1

Moisten a clean cloth with undiluted white vinegar. Wring out the cloth to remove any excess moisture.

    • 2

Wipe down the stainless steel surface to remove surface dirt and stains. Scrub stains to remove them.

    • 3

Moisten another cloth with club soda and rub the steel surface to remove any last stains that remain. Dry the steel with another cloth.

    • 4

Place a nickel-sized amount of metal polish onto a clean cloth. Rub the polish into the surface of the stainless steel.

    • 5

Move the cloth in small, circular motions to buff the surface. When the metal polish turns black, change to a new cloth and wipe the polish off.

Buff the metal with a dry cloth to remove any last traces of metal polish and bring it to a lustrous shine.
