How to Plumb a Clogged Air Vent

The air vent that runs from the back of your dryer to the outside of your house must be plumbed on a regular basis to prevent the buildup of lint from decreasing the effectiveness of your dryer. The lint clogging your dryer’s air vent hose can also catch fire. Cleaning the lint filter inside your dryer is just the first step. To properly clean the hose, the air vent must be plumbed with a handheld duster and a vacuum.

Instructions

    • 1

Push the dryer 2 to 3 feet away from the wall so that you have enough space to get behind it. Disconnect the gas line with a screwdriver if necessary. Pull the air vent hose out of the back of the dryer.

    • 2

Plug in the vacuum. Place the front end of the hose attachment into the dryer air vent. Turn on the vacuum and suck up as much lint as possible.

    • 3

Head outside and locate the outer section of the air vent hose. Look for a small silver vent or pipe on the opposite side of the wall from the dryer vent.

    • 4

Plumb the outside section of the air vent with the handheld duster by inserting the duster into the vent and swishing it around until the lint is gone.

    • 5

Reconnect the air vent hose and the gas line to the back of the dryer. Push the dryer back into place.
