Shut off the furnace at the toggle switch on the side of the blower unit. The switch resembles a circuit breaker switch and serves the same function in cutting power to the furnace.
Unscrew and take off the filter cover panel on the blower unit, which is the metal, box-like structure on the Kenmore furnace. On most models, the panel is at the bottom, held in place by four screws. In a few cases, the filter may be attached in a different location.
Pull out the permanent filter; it may be secured by clips that you'll need to unfasten, or may simply slide into and out of place. Put the filter in a plastic trash bag to prevent dust and dirt from falling to the floor in your home. Carry the bag outdoors.
Remove the filter from the bag and place it on a flat surface with the dirty side facing downward. Setting the filter on a sidewalk or paved driveway works best for cleaning.
Spray the top of the filter with the garden hose using full water pressure. Work the spray back and forth across the filter material to rinse out and wash away dirt and dust. Leave the filter outdoors to air-dry completely.
Insert the filter into its compartment in the furnace, clipping it in if necessary, and replace the cover panel with the screws.
Turn on the toggle switch to start the furnace.
