How to Keep a Down Comforter From Flattening

A down comforter helps turn your bed into a fluffy, soft getaway. The down filling in the comforter is delicate and susceptible to bunching, flattening and shifting. You should fluff the comforter regularly to keep it looking its best and maintaining the light and airy feel. If you take your comforter to a dry cleaner, it might offer fluffing services for an extra fee, but you can save money and do it yourself to extend the life of your down comforter.

Shake the comforter out daily. Make your bed, then pull the comforter out evenly across the bed. Stand at one end, grasp both corners and lift until the end of the comforter is 6 to 8 inches above the bed. Shake the comforter, then allow the back end of the comforter to fall into place.

Turn the comforter frequently to reduce wear. Rotate the corners so that the section of the comforter in the top-right corner moves to the bottom-left corner of your bed in a way similar to flipping a mattress.

Place the comforter in the dryer for 15 to 20 minutes on low heat or the "Cool" air setting weekly. Add two or three tennis balls to the dryer to help fluff the material. Shake the comforter out when you remove it from the dryer.
