Ingredients in Adhesive Tape Remover Pads

Adhesive tape remover pads are generally nonwoven, individual pads soaked within a combination of ingredients that allow the pad to act as a universal remover for adhesive tape. Adhesive tape remover pads are typically used for medical applications to remove adhesives left by tape or bandages from the skin, but they may be utilized for some adhesive or goo removal applications around the house.
  1. Major Ingredients

    • The proportions of major ingredients varies depending on the specific brand, but most share the same main ingredients. Isoparaffin, a sometimes primary ingredient, is a mixture of hydrocarbons, or mineral oils, derived from petroleum. Another common major ingredient is petroleum naphtha, also known as petroleum distillates or aliphatic petroleum naphtha. The third common important ingredient in adhesive remover pads is isoproypl alcohol.

    Minor Ingredients

    • Several minor ingredients may be present in some brands of adhesive tape remover pads. Some products only list active ingredients and may not include minor ingredients on the label. Possible minor ingredients could include isopropyl palmitate, isopropyl myristate, fatty acids, solvent naptha, various parabens, xylene, polyaminopropyl biguanide and others.

    Possible Health Hazards

    • Possible health hazards associated with adhesive tape remover pads are relatively minor and generally associated with major ingredients. The ingredients in these pads undergo a manufacturing process that includes dilution, absorption into a pad and enclosure in a sealed pouch that makes them no longer possess the health risks that undiluted materials may present. Adhesive tape remover pads should not be irritating to skin and eyes, though prolonged contact could cause mild irritation. Although inhalation and ingestion are not normal routs of entry, these chemical-soaked pads could cause dizziness and headache or irritation to the respiratory tract and could be harmful to the digestive tract if swallowed.

    First Aid and Storage

    • Signs and symptoms of a negative reaction to the ingredients in these pads could include dermatitis, edema, redness, defatting and cracking skin while overexposure may be indicated by headache, dizziness, nausea, tiredness and vomiting. If a rash or irritation occurs, discontinue use of the pads. If eye contact occurs, flush eyes with cool water for 15 minutes. To address overexposure or inhalation, get affected individuals to areas with fresh air. Store adhesive tape remover pads at room temperature in a dry storage area. For storage and spill-cleanup purposes, treat these materials as flammable liquids.
