Removal of Burnt Odor From a Metal Pot

Leaving your pot unattended for even a few minutes while cooking can sometimes cause your food to burn in the pot. Although you wash the pot and remove all of the burnt-on food, the burnt smell may linger, making the pot unusable. Treat your metal pot with common ingredients that absorb and reduce odor, such as lemon, salt, baking powder and vinegar. With a few simple steps, you can remove the burnt smell from your pot.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill the pot with a few inches of water.

    • 2

Add one slice of lemon and 1/4 cup of salt to the water. Alternatively, use liquid dish detergent instead of lemon juice and salt.

    • 3

Bring the water to a boil and let it cool down. Dispose of the water and scrub the bottom of the pot with a scouring pad and liquid dish soap. If this is not enough to remove the odor, continue cleaning with baking soda.

    • 4

Fill the pot with a few inches of water. Add 2 tablespoons of baking soda per cup of water. Mix the solution with a spatula. Cover and let stand for 24 hours in the garage or outside.

    • 5

Place the pot on the stove and bring the liquid to a boil. When the liquid boils, reduce the heat and let the water simmer for 15 minutes. Do not let the water evaporate. Dispose of the water and wash the pot with warm water and liquid soap.
