Removing Age Coating From Formica

Formica laminate surfaces add low-maintenance and high quality attractiveness to your floor or countertop. If your home has an older Formica surface it might have turned yellow with age or inappropriate cleaning methods. Although replacing the surface is an option, another less-expensive and viable option is to clean the aged coating off the Formica. You can remove yellow film and a dull appearance with the appropriate supplies and techniques.

Instructions

    • 1
Rubber gloves protect your skin from harsh chemical cleaners.

Put on rubber gloves to protect your skin from irritating and skin-drying cleansing solutions.

    • 2

Pour 1 gallon of warm water into a bucket. Add 2 cups of ammonia.

    • 3

Soak a clean cloth with the ammonia solution. Wring out the excess moisture.

    • 4

Scrub the aged-looking Formica surface to remove dirt and any wax that might be contributing toward the yellowed and dull appearance.

    • 5

Use a nylon mesh sponge dampened with the diluted ammonia solution to scrub any heavily stained or wax-covered areas.

    • 6

Rinse the Formica with a damp cloth. Dry the surface with clean cloths.

    • 7
A natural bristle scrub brush won't scratch Formica.

Tackle any remaining yellowed or aged-looking areas with a paste made from 1/2 cup of powdered oxygen bleach and enough water to bring it to a peanut butter consistency. Apply the paste to the Formica and scrub with a natural bristle brush.

Wipe the paste off the Formica surface with a damp cloth. Rinse the surface with undiluted club soda to give your Formica a lustrous shine. Buff the Formica dry with another cloth.
