Discoloration of Bathtub Drain Covers

Leaning over a tub and scrubbing your drain cover is work. Instead, pinpoint the stain’s source and identify the best cleaning solution for the job. Once you have the right tools for the job, you can cut down on your scrubbing time and clean more effectively.
  1. Lime Deposits and Lime Scales

    • Lime deposits and scales come from minerals in the water and can increase soap scum buildup as well. Treating it frequently prevents the stains from setting and further buildup from occurring. Look for a commercially available lime-removing product that contains a sequestrant such as calgon. This captures and deactivates the mineral in the water that causes lime build up.

    Manganese, Rust or Iron Stains

    • Manganese and iron stains are distinguishable by their colors. Manganese leaves a brownish stain, while iron leaves a reddish stain. Acidic cleansers remove both stains. Apply a mixture of borax and lemon juice to rust and iron stains. Let it dry for an hour, and then rinse with water. For manganese stains, mix cream of tarter with hydrogen peroxide to form a paste. Apply the paste to the discolored area with a damp cloth. Wait 10 minutes, and then rinse with water.

    Brass or Copper Stains

    • Brass or copper stains are characterized by their bluish color and are caused by acidic water. Scrub the stains with a mixture of half water and half ammonia. Rise with water. Never mix ammonia with any other type of cleaner as it can cause dangerous fumes. Always keep the room well ventilated by opening windows and doors and turning on a fan if possible.

Hard Water or Soap Scum Stains

    • Discoloration from hard water or soap scum is easily treated with a mild, commercially available abrasive cleaner. Make your own natural cleaner from common household products. Mix white vinegar and baking soda together to form a paste. Apply it to the discolored area, and the let it sit for a few minutes. Rinse it with clean water and repeat the process if necessary until the stain disappears.
