That musty smell that many have come to associate as “that basement smell” may be the indication of something much more sinister. If the basement is dark and not well ventilated, it only takes the introduction of a little moisture to create a mold and mildew problem. Potentially hazardous to those exposed to it, mold and mildew require prompt attention. Clean up small areas of mold with detergent before sanitizing the area with bleach. Wear protective apparel to protect yourself such as a mask, gloves and glasses. For large areas of mold, contact a professional in your area. Find one in your phone book by looking up mold or flood damage cleanup.
If there are drains in the floor, it may be the source of an unpleasant sewer smell. Look for signs of moisture around the drain that may indicate water coming up into your basement. Pour a pitcher of hot water down into it to help clear the drain out and remove anything that may be lodged in it. A cup of vegetable oil added into the hot water lends extra lubrication. If this doesn’t help and the smell persists, contact a plumber to help locate the exact problem and fix it.
Often basements are used for storing things that there may not be room in the house for. Out of sight and out of mind, these stored boxes and bags accumulate over the years turning into areas of clutter. Areas of garbage and clutter will eventually make the basement begin to smell. Open up any windows and allow some fresh air in while you sort through things and organize or discard them. It’s entirely possible that the smell may be coming from an item within your stored belongings. Once it’s gone, the unpleasant odor will go along with it.
Not a job for the squeamish, there is the possibility of the odor coming from insects and other pests. Bring a flashlight and inspect every nook and cranny for droppings, holes and other damage that may indicate something living downstairs that isn’t welcome. From certain insects that create odors such as stinkbugs to rodents that may have died within the walls, odors from pests can be a real problem. Contact an exterminator immediately to help locate and eliminate the problem.
