How to Apply Acetone to Remove Fiberglass Insulation

Fiberglass insulation is commonly used in construction to create a barrier that makes it difficult for air to pass through, conserving heating and cooling costs. If you need to replace fberglass insulation or remove the material to make structural repairs, the thick fiberglass may occasionally become stuck to a surface. Acetone, which is the active ingredient in nail polish remover, quickly dissolves fiberglass so the insulation can be removed from virtually any surface.

Instructions

    • 1

Set up and start an electric fan pointed at your work space to improve ventilation and minimize your exposure to acetone fumes.

    • 2

Pour a small amount of acetone onto a folded rag. Wear a dust mask when working around insulation where dust may gather, especially in attics. Wear work gloves to protect your hands from the insulation.

    • 3

Pull back the edge of the insulation and blot the area where it is stuck to the underlying surface, using the rag with acetone.

    • 4

Lift the insulation and pull gently to avoid tearing it off in chunks as the material begins to loosen. Apply more acetone to the rag as needed to loosen the insulation and remove it from the space.

    • 5

Fold old sheets of fiberglass insulation and put them in plastic garbage bags for disposal.
