How to Clean Cut Crystal

Cut crystal is fragile. It can be easily chipped, cracked or even broken in the case of thinner items such as stemware. When it’s time to clean your cut crystal, a specific process will help prevent accidental damage while keeping your crystal looking its best without cloudy residue, streaks or water spots.

Things You'll Need

  • Sink stopper
  • Soft cloths of dishtowels
  • 2 tablespoons mild dish soap
  • 2 cups distilled white vinegar
  • Wooden spoon, optional

Instructions

    • 1

Place a stopper in the sink and line the bottom of your sink with enough soft cloths or dishtowels to fully cover the entire area. For sinks with a divider in the middle, drape a soft cloth or two over the sides to keep cut crystal items from getting nicks or cracks if they come into contact with the edge of the sink.

    • 2

Fill the sink about three-fourths full with warm water from the tap. Add about 2 tablespoons of mild dish detergent and 2 cups of distilled white vinegar to the sink. Use your hand or a wooden spoon to stir and combine the mixture.

    • 3

Submerge the cut crystal piece in the water and allow it to soak for one to two minutes. After soaking, wipe the crystal with a clean microfiber cloth. If you are washing cut crystal glassware, hold the piece by the bottom to avoid damaging the stem.

Line a large plastic basin with soft cloths or dishtowels, and fill it with 1 gallon of distilled water. Place the washed cut crystal item in the clean water, dipping and removing the cut crystal in and out of the basin a few times to remove the soap and vinegar mixture.

Use a clean lint-free cotton cloth to dry the cut crystal after removing it from the rinsing basin. Store your crystal as desired before moving on to other pieces to prevent damage.
