How to Stop Baking Sheet Pan Oxidation

Aluminum is a material commonly used to make baking sheets because it is lightweight, inexpensive and durable. Over time, your aluminum baking sheets may become dull and stained looking as the aluminum forms a protective but ugly layer of aluminum oxide. You can prevent this layer from building up and staining your cookware by using the appropriate cleaning methods to remove it.

Instructions

    • 1

Sprinkle your baking sheet with dots of lemon juice from a bottle, or get a lemon from the refrigerator and slice it in half.

    • 2

Pour about 3 tablespoons of the bottled lemon juice onto a rag. If using a real lemon, dip the lemon in salt.

    • 3

Rub the baking pan with the rag, or rub it with the sliced lemon. If using a lemon dipped in salt, rub gently so as not to scrape the pan.

    • 4

Repeat this process several times. You should start to notice improvement. If the problem is not completely fixed, continue to the next steps.

    • 5

Fill your sink with boiling water. Do this by heating water in a pan on your stove, then pouring it into the stoppered sink when the water starts to boil. For every quart of water, mix in 2 tablespoons of vinegar.

    • 6

Place the aluminum pan into the sink. Most likely, one end of the pan will be sticking out of the water. Let the pan soak in the hot water for 15 minutes.

    • 7

Pull out the pan and rub it down with lemon juice again. When this is finished, repeat this process to clean the other end of the pan.
