How to Use a Dryer Sheet to Remove Lime Scale

Bathroom-cleaning tricks include using dryer sheets to polish chrome or remove lime scale. Scale results from hard-water mineral buildup. Especially in showers and near faucets, minerals combine with soap scum and creates buildup on tile, enamel, porcelain and metal that resists removal. Dryer sheets seem to help wipe away soap scum and lime scale. Because dryer sheets generally contain chemicals and fragrances, you might also try an alternative eco-friendly method for removing hard-water buildup that's recommended by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Crumple a dryer sheet in your hand. Rub it vigorously on surfaces affected by lime scale while the surfaces are wet, such as the shower door after a shower. Alternatively, wipe the area with a wet sponge or rag, and rub the wet limescale with the dryer sheet.

    • 2

Repeat wetting the lime scale and rubbing it firmly with the dryer sheet. Rinse the area with plain water.

    • 3

Pour undiluted white vinegar on a rag or sponge. Apply it full-strength to the scale residue. Leave it on for 15 minutes and rinse it off with plain water. For stubborn mineral deposits, such as on a faucet, drape or wrap a vinegar-soaked rag around the affected area and leave it on for half an hour. Rub the lime scale with a nonabrasive scrub pad to remove it.

Wet the scrub pad and pour 1 tablespoon of baking soda on the pad to help scour lime scale off of tile, glass or other surfaces. Baking soda helps scrub away mineral deposits and soap scum, without damaging finishes.
