How to Clean Windows Without Windex

Windex is a classic for a reason -- the all-purpose window cleaner delivers streak-free glass. If you're trying to save a little money on your cleaning supplies or switch to eco-friendly house-cleaning products, however, replace Windex with castile soap and plain white vinegar. When you use up your last bottle of Windex, refill it with a white vinegar solution instead of tossing it in the recycling. You'll find your windows get sparkling clean at a fraction of the cost.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Mix 2 tablespoons of castile soap into a 1-gallon bucket of hot water. Swish the water to make suds. Dip a large, soft sponge into the water and wring it out.

    • 2

Wash your windows by moving the soapy sponge in a circular motion. After washing each window, dip the sponge in the water and wring it out again.

    • 3

Fill a spray bottle one-half full with white vinegar. Fill it the rest of the way with warm water. Replace the sprayer and shake the bottle to mix the vinegar-and-water solution.

    • 4

Spray the solution onto the windows from top to bottom. Allow the vinegar to run down the pane for 30 seconds to remove any remaining soap.

    • 5

Wipe the windows with a soft white rag or crumpled newspaper using a circular motion. As an alternative, use a squeegee to remove the vinegar solution. Place the blade of the squeegee horizontally at the top of the window, pull straight down and wipe the liquid off the blade with a rag before doing the next pass.
