Ideas for Using a Sticky Wall

A sticky wall is a brainstorming technique that allows the people using it to see the big picture. It adds a visual element to the planning procedure and allows people to take things into account that are not immediately visible. After you have a sticky wall put up in your classroom or office, take advantage of the many opportunities that it provides.
  1. Organizing Tasks

    • Place small sheets of paper with each participant's name up on the sticky wall. Create task tags by writing down each task that needs to be performed on a piece of paper. Ask people to volunteer for jobs as you read them, and place them under the appropriate person's name, which helps to ensure that the work load stays equal and also lets people know what everyone else is doing.

    Flow Charting

    • At one end of the sticky wall, place a piece of paper that describes the goal. At the end of the sticky wall, write down the word "start." Tell the people who are in attendance that you are all located at "start." Ask them what steps you need to take to get to the goal on the other side of the board. Ask them to be as specific as they can, and gradually fill in the space between with steps that lead you towards the goal.

    Cloud of Ideas

    • When you need a lot of ideas and you want to see how they might match up with each other, use a cloud brainstorming formation. Write the goal at the center of the board, and ask for ideas that will help you get to the goal. For example, the goal might be "successful fundraiser," and some of the options that the attendees offer may include things like bake sale, silent auction or door-to-door solicitation, which helps you to visualize what your opportunities may be with nothing getting forgotten.

    Thought Organization

    • If you have issues with racing thoughts or you simply cannot get organized, use the sticky wall to marshal your efforts. Simply write everything that you are thinking on pieces of paper, not stopping for five minutes. Place the thoughts on the wall, and organize them by subject. This individual activity helps you keep your thoughts in order and provides some insight into what your are searching for.
