Do They Make Wax for Vinyl Floors?

Vinyl is a common and cheap flooring material that differs from linoleum in that it contains all synthetic materials. It is relatively cheap, durable and easy to install. Most manufacturers recommend against waxing vinyl floors because they have a thin layer of polyurethane that will repel most types of wax. Instead, use a polish to help the floor shine.
  1. Restrictions

    • Manufacturers cover most types of vinyl flooring with a thin layer of polyurethane that will help protect the flooring from stains and scratches. This polyurethane, however, is smooth enough that it will prevent traditional paste and solvent waxes from adhering to the floor. This is why manufacturers, such as Armstrong, recommend against paste wax or solvent-based polishes.

    Alternatives

    • Homeowners who still want the look of a waxed and polished floor without damaging their vinyl flooring can polish their floor with a vinyl floor polish. If your vinyl floor is several years old and you fear that the polyurethane coating has worn off, use a vinyl sealant to polish your floor and prevent it from getting stained or scratched.

    Process

    • The polishing and sealing process involves first cleaning the vinyl floor as thoroughly as possible. Apply the vinyl polish or the sealant with a mop in one or two very thin layers as directed by the manufacturer. Let the sealant or polish dry completely before walking across the floor.

    Wear Prevention

    • Prevent the vinyl floors from needing to be polished or sealed by preventing unnecessary wear and tear. Place felt pads on the bottom of furniture and remove rolling casters. Take your shoes off before walking on vinyl and put rugs in high-traffic areas.
