Microwave Sterilizer Instructions

Microwave baby bottle sterilizers use the same principle as stove-top sterilizers: bacteria is killed by the high heat of steam. The difference is that microwave sterilizing takes just a couple of minutes. There are several microwave sterilizers on the market, available at baby centers, big box stores and online. Choose one that fits your needs--and your microwave. Portable plastic sterilizers make it possible to sterilize bottles away from home, as long as you have access to a microwave.

Instructions

    • 1

Add water to the bottom part of the sterilizer to the fill line, or as directed by the manufacturer.

    • 2

Place the bottles upside-down on the bottle holders on the tray. Place rings, nipples and pacifiers on the tray with the bottles.

    • 3

Place the tray on top of the water-filled bottom piece.

    • 4

Cover the tray with the lid and snap it into place.

    • 5

Put the sterilizer into the microwave and run it on high for 2 to 6 minutes, depending on your oven's wattage. Small 500-watt microwaves require the full 6 minutes, while microwaves over 1100 watts need only 2 minutes, and medium 850-watt ovens need 4 minutes.

    • 6

Remove the sterilizer from the microwave and allow it to cool down for several minutes before opening. The contents will remain sterilized for 24 hours, as long as you don't open the sterilizer.
