How to Finish Edges of Carpet Remnant

A carpet remnant or a carpet runner is a piece of carpet left over after you have carpet installed in your home. Many people use these as mud rugs during the winter or when they expect heavy traffic, such as general contractors in their home. You can simply throw the runner on the floor and use it but soon the edges of the carpet will start to fray. To prevent this, finish the edges by binding them.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a straight edge ruler on the carpet and cut the edges of the carpet with a utility knife. Follow the straight edge. This will give you a professional appearance with your runners.

    • 2

Cut a piece of the binding strip to a length that will extend around the perimeter of the runner. Carpet edging usually looks like nylon or other synthetic material that comes in a long stripped rolled like tape. You can usually get it at most fabric, craft or carpet retailers.

    • 3

Apply hot glue to one edge of the carpet with a hot glue gun.

    • 4

Wrap the binding over the edge of the runner with the glue on it so half the binging rests on top of the carpet and the other half rests on the bottom of the carpet.

    • 5

Apply glue to the next edge of the carpet and apply the binding. Repeat this as you work your way around the runner. Allow 12 hours for the glue to dry fully before you use the runner.
