How to Get Rid of Toys

A kid's clutter begins at birth with baby's first teddy bears. As the years go on, the toy problem becomes even worse after every birthday, Christmas and visit from the grandparents. Fast forward to the school years and you have a child's bedroom, toy room or basement filled with bins, bookcases and boxes of unwanted toys. There are several ways to get rid of your child's unwanted toys that will benefit your community and your own pocketbook.

Instructions

    • 1

Examine all of your children's toys and separate them into three piles: keep, donate or sell, and toss. Throw away any toys that are broken or stained.

    • 2

Donate your toys to a local charity. Drop off the toys at a toy drive or a resale shop that supports a charity in your community.

    • 3

Sell the toys at a yard sale. Price all of the toys reasonably to ensure that they get sold to other children and don't end up back in your toy room, child's bedroom or basement.

    • 4

Drop off the unwanted toys at local preschools and daycares. Call ahead to inquire if daycares are accepting donations and if they're looking for specific types of toys.

    • 5

Give your toys to your church, a local hospital or library after calling ahead to inquire if these institutions accept toy donations and if there are any restrictions.

    • 6

Organize a toy exchange with friends, family members and neighbors that also have children. Bring all of your unwanted toys to the event and allow your kids to swap their old toys for another child's toys. This will not only help get rid of unwanted toys, it will also save you money on any future new toy purchases.

    • 7

Institute a one toy in, one toy out policy in your home. Instruct your kids that each time they get a new toy, an old one must be tossed out, donated or sold.
