How to Take Burns Out of Carpet

If someone drops something like a lit cigarette on your carpet, leaving behind a burn, you cannot take out the burn. The burn took out part of your carpet. The burn also changed some of the carpet fibers, turning them dark and singed. Depending on the degree of the burn and the type of carpet, however, it is often possible to remove some of the scorched fibers and restore the appearance of the carpet.

Instructions

    • 1

Run your finger in a circle around the burned area to feather out the carpet fibers. Do this if the carpet is plush.

    • 2

Open the blades of the scissors slightly and wedge the tips of the blades between the burnt fibers and the unburned section.

    • 3

Snip off the scorched fibers. Do this slowly and carefully so as not to remove too much carpet fiber. Remove just the burned top sections of the fibers.

    • 4

Fill in the burned area by gathering some carpet fuzz from an inconspicuous area of the carpet and gluing it into the area, after rolling the fuzz into a shape matching the burn mark.
