How to Straighten Up a Curled Carpet

The edges of your carpet may remain stubbornly curled if you have stored it rolled up for awhile or if you mistakenly placed furniture on top of a folded carpet edge. You might be able to straighten carpets with less severe curls by placing weight on it for awhile, or you can try steaming the carpet with a clothes iron. If you have a severely curled rug that does not respond to these treatments, bring it to a carpet specialist. He can open and resew certain areas in the rug to release the tension.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the edge flat against the floor with one hand and position a piece of furniture over it to help flatten the edge. Leave the furniture on the rug for about 30 days to straighten it.

    • 2

Steam the carpet if it is still curled after a month under the furniture. Position a towel over the curled edge.

    • 3

Add water to a clothes iron with a steam setting and set the iron to wool. Wait for the iron to heat up.

    • 4

Straighten out the carpet edges with the iron; this helps loosen up the carpet's fibers. Only iron the carpet on top of the towel.
