With the variety of colors available in fabric dyes, you will be able to mix and match your pillowcases with curtains, bedspreads and other room decor. Instructions

    • 1

Wet the pillowcases you want to dye, and set them aside.

    • 2

Select a dye type appropriate to the pillowcase fabric. Check the fabric tag on the inside of the pillow for fabric content. Most fabric dyes work best on 100 percent cotton, linen and silk, and some brands have dyes specifically made for polyester and nylon fabrics.

    • 3

Select the color dye desired. Check package directions for the correct amount of dye to use for the volume of fabric you are dying. Some dark or bright colors may require two packages to attain a rich, deep shade.

    • 4

Dissolve powdered dye in water according to package directions. Some powdered dyes must be dissolved in boiling water first, some are in dissolvable packaging, and others are available in liquid form.

    • 5

Add the dissolved dye to water in the container. Check the temperature using a cooking thermometer, according to package instructions.

    • 6

Add vinegar or salt, if needed, according to package directions. Depending on the fabric content, you may need to add one of these ingredients to help set the dye into the fibers.

    • 7

Stir the water well, to completely dissolve the dye and mix it through all the water. If using a washing machine, turn on the wash cycle to agitate the water for a few minutes.

    • 8

Place the wet pillowcases into the dye solution. If using a washing machine, run through a complete cycle. If using a pot on the stove, follow the package directions for the amount of time to leave the pillowcase in the dye, as well as for any stirring directions.

    • 9

Remove dyed garments from the solution, and line dry or place in the dryer.
