How to Burn Incense Oil

Incense oils, also called essential oils, often are made from the leaves, bark, flowers and other parts of plants. Gently warming them up is an easy and cost-effective way to diffuse pleasing and therapeutic aromas in your home. Use incense oils with caution, though, as using too much oil or improperly heating oil can produce an overpowering scent that takes a while to dissipate.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill the bowl of an incense oil burner with purified water, if possible. The chemicals and minerals in tap water may alter the oil's aroma.

    • 2

Add two to 15 drops of oil in the bowl of the burner. The amount needed depends on the strength of the oil as well as the size of the room you want to fill with scent. Start off with fewer drops and add more, if needed.

    • 3

Place a tea light in the bottom of the oil burner and light it.

    • 4

Allow the oil to heat up for at least 10 minutes. Sniff the air to test the strength of the aroma. Add more oil -- two drops at a time -- if you want to increase the scent.
