How to Check New Furniture for Bed Bugs

Bed bugs can become a common problem in many areas. Bed bugs are not known to spread diseases; nevertheless, they are a nuisance, and once established in a home, they are not easy to get rid of. When bringing new furniture into your home, whether you bought it new or used, thoroughly check it to prevent infesting your home with unwanted bed bugs.

Instructions

    • 1

Keep the furniture outdoors if at all possible, until you have checked it over for the pests.

    • 2

Check the furniture all over for dark-red or black specks, which may be fecal stains from the bedbugs.

    • 3

Turn on a flashlight and use it to check crevices in the furniture. Even if you are checking the furniture in daylight, a flashlight helps you better see the small creatures or their droppings.

    • 4

Check beneath the furniture with the flashlight. Bed bugs often hide in small corners away from view. Even un-upholstered furniture may have bedbugs that have hitched a ride. Check all furniture -- not just upholstered furniture and beds.
