How to Replace A Fitted Sheet With a Flat Sheet

It's usually a good idea to use a fitted sheet to cover your mattress, but the elastic in fitted sheets can have a tendency to loosen after repeated washes. Another downside to fitted sheets is that they are more expensive than flat sheets. If you need a replacement sheet to cover your bed and want to save a few dollars, there is no reason why you can't place a flat sheet atop your mattress. Flat sheets are just as comfortable and thrifty to boot.

Instructions

    • 1

Establish the size of your mattress and bed. If you don't know this, use a tape measure to gather the dimensions of your mattress, and consult a bed size chart. Beds in the United States range in size from a narrow bunk bed to a grand king.

    • 2

Visit your local bed linen store or go online to purchase a flat sheet to fit your bed.

    • 3

Remove the fitted sheet from your bed and place it in your laundry.

    • 4

Take your new flat sheet out of its packaging, unfold it, and iron on a medium heat.

    • 5

Lay your flat sheet over your bed.

    • 6

Lift one side of your mattress, and tuck one side of your sheet securely in place. When you reach a corner, tuck the sheet in allowing it to overhang the next stretch of your mattress.

    • 7

Tuck the overhang under your mattress and then repeat the process around the perimeter of your bed.
