The Advantages of a Bottom Freezer

• Bottom-mounted freezers typically come in either a pullout drawer style or a swing-open door style. Each style of freezer compartment has its own advantages, depending on the unit. The swing-open door style doesn't need a lot of extra room as the freezer door swings open only as far as the refrigerator door, meaning no extra door space is needed. The pullout drawer offers the convenience of viewing all of the items from above the drawer, leaving no room for foods to be hidden behind other items. However, if you live in a small space without a lot of floor area, a pullout drawer may not be the best option.

Freezer Organization

• The pullout drawer on bottom-mount freezers offers an advantage with frozen food organization. Most bottom freezers include racks and dividers to help organize items neatly in the freezer compartment. The racks and dividers make storing items in easily viewed categories easy so ice cream, frozen foods or meat can be found effortlessly when the homeowner needs to prepare the item.

Eye-level Refrigerator Compartment

• One of the advantages of having the freezer compartment on the bottom is that all of the items in the refrigerator compartment are now at eye level for most adults. The refrigerator positioned on top poses a large convenience for most individuals, preventing them from having to bend over to retrieve items from the bottom of the fridge, which is used more often than the freezer. The freezer positioned on the bottom is also convenient when the fridge contains items parents want to keep away from children until after dinner. Items such as cakes, pudding or other desserts can be placed on the top rack of the refrigerator where little hands cannot reach them. Alternatively, children can reach items in the freezer such as Popsicles or other frozen treats without assistance.

Energy Efficiency

• Bottom freezer compartments are also marketed as more energy efficient than side-by-side refrigerator/freezer models. Because heat rises, the area needing the most frigid air stays colder. With side-by-side models, the unit must work just as hard to keep the freezer compartment cold as it does the refrigerator compartment.
