Steam Cooker Instructions

Steam cookers are kitchen appliances that allow you to steam vegetables without constantly watching a pot of boiling water. This method of cooking preserves nutrients in food and minimizes the use of fat when cooking. Many types of steamers are on the market but most of them work in a similar manner. Consult your owner's manual for instructions for you specific machine.

Instructions

    • 1

Add about 1 inch of water to the inner bowl. The water amount varies depending on what you are steaming and the kind of machine you are using. The more water you add, the longer the food will steam. One cup of water equals about 16 minutes in the steamer.

    • 2

Set the food in the removable steam basket, put the basket in the steamer and close the lid. Open the steam vent if required by the model you are using.

    • 3

Select the steam menu on the display unit and choose your setting. Some multi-purpose steamers will need you to set it on "steam." Others simply need a dial turned to "full" so the water will boil.

    • 4

Remove the steaming basket when the food is finished. Wear oven mitts to handle the hot basket. Some machines automatically turn to the "warm" setting when the water is gone, others need to be turned off.
