Are Corelle Dishes Oven Safe?

Corelle dishes have become a favorite choice for kitchen dishware. The company first introduced the product line in 1970 as affordable, easy to clean, everyday dishware that would not chip or crack with normal household use. Today Corelle dishes are offered in an array of patterns and styles to match the decor of nearly any home. Many people enjoy the versatility of uses, from food prep to serving to storage.
  1. Composition

    • Corelle dishes can be placed in an oven due to their composition. They are made of layers of glass laminated together, called Vitrelle glass. These combined layers become very strong and will not break or chip as easily as other glass will. Once the dishes are complete, an organic, nontoxic coating is applied to the surface to protect it from damage during shipping, which washes off with hot soapy water or in an automatic dishwasher.

    Oven Use

    • The oven should always be preheated before placing the dish inside even though Corelle dishes are oven safe. The maximum oven temperature the manufacturer recommends is 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Dishes can be placed in the oven empty to simply warm the dish or with food inside for cooking, warming or reheating. Care should always be taken when placing dishes in or removing them from a hot oven; an oven mitt will protect your skin from burning on the hot surfaces.

    Considerations

    • Though Corelle dishes are oven safe, they are prone to breaking or cracking when exposed to sudden and extreme temperature changes. Avoid putting cold liquids or food into warmed or hot dishes or placing a hot dish on a wet or cold surface. Doing so may cause the dish to break or shatter upon contact or later for no apparent reason. Placing Corelle dishes on a stovetop, under a broiler, near a gas flame or in a toaster oven can also cause breakage.

    Care and Maintenance

    • Many benefits come with Corelle dishes; they stack compactly, making them easy to store in a cupboard. The smooth finish allows food to rinse off cleanly when washing by hand or in the dishwasher. Though you should not use harsh and abrasive cleaners, the colorful patterns on Corelle dishes are fade resistant. Keeping Corelle dishes looking like new takes very little effort; should metallic or gray surface scratches appear on the dishes, just rub with a nonabrasive cleaner and a nylon cleaning pad.
