Can I Use Spray Kitchen Oil to Kill Bugs on My Outside?

Before attacking insects flying and crawling around outside your home, take a moment and look around your kitchen. Home remedies for repelling and killing insects include plain old cooking oil. A mixture of cooking oil and other ingredients works well at repelling certain types of bugs and keeping those bugs away from your home. Cooking oil is not effective against all types of bugs, however, but does work on a number of pests.
  1. Bugs Repelled

    • Cooking oil is effective against fall webworm, leafrollers, aphids, spider mites, mealy bugs, psyllids, leafhoppers and scales. Colorado State University recommends spraying the cooking oil during the warmer months. Spray the outside of your home in the late part of spring and through the early months of fall for maximum effectiveness. In the dormant season the cooking oil repels and controls different types of bugs, including scales, aphids, mites and caterpillars. Use a thin coat of oil on house plants and outdoor plants susceptible to aphid infestations, which prevents aphids from taking over the plants.

    Mixing the Oil

    • Use regular cooking oil as the base for your homemade spray. Mix 2 tbsp. of vegetable oil or cooking oil with 1 gallon of water and 2 tbsp. of dish soap. Pour the mixture in a spray bottle, and lightly coat any plants or household items with an even spray of the solution. Leave the oil solution on the items for at least two hours, and gently rinse with fresh water. You may need reapplications of the treatment depending on the severity of the infestation. Undiluted oil also works, but the mixture may leave behind a greasy film.

    Horticultural Oils

    • Horticultural oils contain high levels of chemicals or pesticides mixed with oils. Farmers use the solution for the treatment of fields and other areas contaminated with pests. When you eat farm fresh produce without washing the fruits or vegetables first, you may ingest a small amount of this oil. According to Go Beyond Organic, farmers typically use a combination of canola oil and other pesticides when treating bugs and insect infestations in the fields.

    Warning

    • Avoid using the oil mixture on certain products, including fabric or upholstered items. The oil leaves behind a greasy film and may discolor items covered in fabric. Always test the oil on a small area and look for any signs of damage or discoloration. Use caution when spraying the mixture on plants as certain plants cannot handle the absorption of the oil.
