How to Remove Pilling From My Sweatshirt Without a Clothes Shaver

Unsightly bits of fuzzy fabric on a sweatshirt, known as "pilling," can make the shirt look old and worn. Fortunately, you can remove pilling without damaging the fabric to make the top look like new. Pilling occurs with ordinary wear and sometimes washing and drying. The threads and fibers on the sweatshirt's surface break and tangle from rubbing against other objects, leaving behind bundled balls of fabric.

Things You'll Need

  • Sharp scissors
  • Fabric comb
  • Fabric pumice stone

Instructions

Place the sweatshirt on a flat surface. Pull a section of the fabric tight and lightly run the fabric comb over areas with pilling. Remove fabric from the comb teeth as needed. Repeat until all pilling is removed.

    • 2

Lay the sweatshirt on a rounded surface. Pull on a section with pilling and hold it taut. Cut the pilling from the sweatshirt with scissors. Repeat on each section of the sweatshirt until the pilling is gone.

    • 3

Lay out the sweatshirt on a flat surface. Hold a section of the sweater taut and gently rub a fabric pumice stone over the pilling. Repeat on all areas with pilling.
