How to Remove the Shiny Spots After Cleaning Latex Walls

You might notice that your walls will show bright and shiny spots after you've cleaned them. This is referred to as burnishing and it happens when you enhance the sheen and gloss on an area of your painted walls by repeatedly rubbing it. Burnishing can happen with latex paint as long as it is not high-gloss paint. Prevent this by using higher gloss paint that will not show burnish marks as easily or by purchasing higher quality paint that is more wear-resistant. There isn't anything you can do to remove the marks except to cover them.

Instructions

    • 1

Dip a paintbrush into the latex paint you used to paint your walls. Use the leftover color to ensure it will be the same shade or purchase the same shade from a hardware store.

    • 2

Brush the paintbrush against the sides of the paint can to remove most of the paint. This will prevent you from having to remove the paint once you've placed it on the wall.

    • 3

Brush the paint directly over the shiny spot. Don't over-smooth the paint or brush over one area too many times as this will actually cause brush marks. The latex paint will harden as it dries and if you brush over it, the bristles will push into the otherwise smooth surface.

Repeat the process with the rest of the shiny spots.

    • 5

      Let the paint dry completely.
