Measure the space available in your shower for the shelf using a tape measure and then decide on a good width. You do not want the shelf to stick out and become a hazard. For instance, assume the shelf to be 2 feet long and 18 inches wide. You can adjust the measurements for your personal needs.
Cut a piece of ¼-inch acrylic, Plexiglas or Lexan to two feet long with a width of 18 inches. Choose clear plastic or a pigmented plastic that goes with your décor. Use a band saw to cut the plastic to size.
Sand the edges of the plastic using 600-grit, 800-grit and then 1000-grit sandpaper to make them smooth and clear again.
Position the plated L brackets against the shower wall approximately 4 inches closer together than the length of the shelf. Place a level on top of the brackets, position the brackets so they rest level and then mark the mounting holes from the brackets onto the wall.
Drill holes large enough for wall anchors into the shower wall using your hand drill and drill bit.
Fill the holes with silicone caulk. The caulk prevents water from getting into the wall.
Drive in the wall anchors with a rubber hammer and then secure the brackets to the wall with stainless steel screws. Stainless steel does not rust.
Place the shelf onto the top of the brackets and center it from left to right.
Mark the mounting holes onto the plastic and then drill out holes in the plastic large enough to fit the bolts you plan to use to secure the shelf to the brackets.
Place the stainless steel bolts through the holes in the shelf and bracket and then secure the bolts with stainless steel nuts and a wrench.
