How to Seal Smells Out of Flooring

Some types of flooring, such as linoleum or vinyl, are less porous than wood or concrete, but all types of flooring will absorb odors. If you create strong smells in your home, your floor might begin to absorb these odors. Any type of floor sealant will help prevent the floor from absorbing smells, but if the odor is very pervasive the floor will often absorb the smell. Pervasive odors include those from pet urine or if you spill a strong-smelling perfume or food item on the floor. Nevertheless, seal the floors to help prevent these smells.

Instructions

  1. Sealing Wood Floors

    • 1

Clean the wood floor as thoroughly as possible.

    • 2

Roll a paint roller into the wood sealer and apply it directly to the wood floor. Work in small sections to apply an even layer of sealant.

    • 3

Let the sealant dry for at least 8 hours.

    • 4

Lightly sand the sealant with superfine 220-grit sandpaper. This will even out the finish so that your floors feel smooth when you walk on them. Sand with the grain until the wood is smooth and soft.

    • 5

Clean the sawdust off the floor with a damp cloth and let the floor dry completely.

    • 6

Apply a second coat of sealant with the paint roller and let it dry overnight.

    Sealing Natural Stone Floors

    • 7

Clean the floor as thoroughly as possible. Rinse it to remove any cleaning solutions and let it dry completely.

    • 8

Pour 1 cup of sealer directly onto the floor and spread it across the floor with a clean rag. Do this in 5-foot sections at a time and work until the entire floor is covered.

    • 9

Let the sealant sit for four minutes or according to the manufacturer's directions.

    • 10

Sprinkle a few drops of the sealer over each tile when the sealer is almost dry. Rub the drops into each tile with a rag.

    • 11

Let it sit overnight and apply a second coat the next day.
