How to Make Sport Coat Sleeves Longer

A sport coat can be an expensive purchase. It can also be very difficult to find a sport coat that fits you well. The coat needs to fit nicely along your shoulders and back, at your waist and in the sleeves. If everything fits nicely accept the sleeves of the sport coat are too short, there is a way for you to make the sleeves a bit longer. However, how much longer you can make them will be limited by the amount of fabric that was used to make the hem.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the hem on the sleeves of the sport coat using a stitch remover.

    • 2

Unfold the fabric to see how much you have to work with. Put the jacket on and determine where the new hem should be placed. The sleeves should rest at your wrist when you're standing normally.

    • 3

Fold the fabric at the location of the new hem and add straight pins to keep it folded over.

    • 4

Turn the jacket sleeves inside out and iron the fold as added reinforcement while you sew the new hem.

    • 5

Add a straight stitch about 5/8 of an inch from the fold using a sewing machine. Choose a thread color that matches the jacket.

    • 6

Cut away any remaining fabric below the stitch to complete the hem.
