How to Care for a Damask Tablecloth

Firm, silky and glossy patterned damask tablecloths are treasured by many for their beauty and elegance. Damask is named for the city of Damascus, a huge trading and manufacturing center during the Middle Ages. Made from linen, cotton, silk, rayon and blends of these materials, damask is woven by a centuries-old technique initially imported from China. Care for a damask tablecloth by immediately washing, drying, ironing and storing it properly after each use.

Instructions

  1. Washing a Damask Tablecloth

    • 1

Wash a damask linen tablecloth by hand in a large sink or bathtub after each use by submerging the tablecloth in room-temperature water.

    • 2

Add a small amount of mild, bleach-free detergent, and gently agitate the tablecloth.

    • 3

Bleach white damask tablecloths with an oxygen bleach containing hydrogen peroxide.

    • 4

Rinse the tablecloth by submerging it in clear, room-temperature water. Handle it gently so the delicate fibers are not damaged.

    • 5

Rinse the tablecloth under clear, running water to remove any soap residue.

Drying and Storing a Damask Tablecloth

    • 6

Drape the tablecloth over a tautly strung clothesline so it doesn't wrinkle. Don't use clothespins, because they leave creases in the fabric. Keep the tablecloth out of direct sunlight so it doesn't yellow.

    • 7

Iron the tablecloth while it is damp for best results, using the linen setting on your iron. Iron dark-colored or embroidered Damask tablecloths on the wrong side only.

    • 8

Fold the tablecloth carefully and store it in a dry, well-ventilated cabinet or on a shelf. Do not place anything on top of the tablecloth.
