Can Pyrex Go in a 400-Degree Oven?

Pyrex is a brand of tempered glass designed for cooking in the oven and microwave or storing the food in the refrigerator or freezer. Whether this bakeware can be used at a specific temperature greatly depends on how it is handled. Safe handling and care of Pyrex will ensure its versatility to use at a range of temperatures in the oven.
  1. Pyrex

    • When it was created in 1915 by the Corning company, Pyrex was composed of heat-treated borosilicate glass. After the 1940s, the composition changed to a heat-strengthened soda lime. The heating process to strengthen the glassware enabled it to withstand a greater range of temperatures without damage. Both forms of Pyrex cookware retain similar temperature stable qualities, but modern Pyrex made from soda lime is more resistant to breakage from impacts.

    Safe Temperatures

    • Safe temperatures for Pyrex range from 0 degrees in the freezer to 450 degrees Fahrenheit in the oven. Corning features a roast chicken recipe using its glass Pyrex roaster, requiring it to be cooked at 450 degrees Fahrenheit. Unsafe temperatures for Pyrex are when the temperature swings rapidly or when the pan comes in direct contact with the heat source, such as under the broiler or on a stove burner. Never use these cooking methods with Pyrex cookware.

    Avoiding Temperature Breaks

    • Pyrex bakeware should never be heated with the oven. Preheat the oven fully before adding the baking dish, and add liquid to completely cover the bottom of the pan before putting it in the oven. This liquid acts as an insulation to protect the Pyrex from the high heat of the preheated oven and adds moisture to the food. Cooking foods in a dry pan could result in the pan breaking. Never use the broiler, stove burner or grill with Pyrex cookware.

    Proper Handling

    • Mishandling of Pyrex can result in the pan breaking, cracking or chipping. Inspect the dish for cracks or chips before using, and if you find these in a Pyrex dish, discard it. Place the hot pan on a trivet or potholder after removing it from the oven until it cools completely. Do not refrigerate, freeze or add water for washing to a hot Pyrex dish. Any of these could shock the glass and cause it to break. Only use dry potholders because wet potholders could burn you or damage the baking dish.
